Ahhh hello Autumn!
My most favourite time of the year by far and being a gardener there is so much to do.
I will be keeping you all updated on seasonal gardening jobs, but for now let’s concentrate on the most exciting one.
Autumn really is the season to grow forth and multiply.
And by this, I mean save yourselves a few quid, because let’s face it gardening can be an expensive pastime.
Dividing your perennials now means you can get numerous FREE plants this Autumn.
And who doesn’t like free plants?
It’s pretty easy to achieve and can fill those border spaces for next year.
Some plants to divide this autumn are as follows:
Delphinium
Perennial Geraniums
Oriental Poppies
Peonies
Day Lillies
Phlox
Iris
Bleeding Heart
Veronica
Astilbe
Hosta’s
Ornamental Grasses
Echinacea
Heuchera
Alchemilla
Japanese Anemone
Pulmonaria
Salvia
Leucanthemum
Agapanthus
Here is how to divide your perennials and get FREE plants this Autumn:
While the earth is moist, lift the plant of choice with a garden fork and lay it on the ground.
Have a good look at the roots and crown of the plant, to determine the best way to split it.
Some plants like geraniums provide plantlets on their own roots, that you can just pull apart from the main plant.
Fibrous rooted plants like Heuchera can be pulled apart easily to form a few different clumps.
Large fibrous rooted plants like day lilies will need two forks back-to-back to leaver the plant apart.
Woody crowns of delphiniums and agapanthus require a sharp spade to slice through to separate the plant.
Once you have decided on which method is best, dig the holes as big as necessary.
Add a little soil improver to the area.
Plant your Free autumn plants as soon as they are divided and water in well.
